Long Review Short: An intelligent zombie film that’s exciting and intense, but stumbles a bit at the end.
With movies, shows and games such as: Zombieland, The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, do find yourself saying, “I'm tired of Zombies! Zombies are played out!”? Hey I understand but, World War Z is an unique zombie film you do not want to miss. Loosely based from the 2006 novel with the same name, the film has some fans of the book irritated that the film is some what different.
The film begins by introducing us to Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his family. Minutes later the film quickly thrust into action and zombies are quickly taking over the city. The impressive effects for the zombies make every action scene of the film very intense. Imagine every zombie is as fast as Usain Bolt. The story is also impressive, very rarely we see a zombie epidemic from the very beginning of the outbreak. WWZ has a great balance between story and edge of your seat action.
Unfortunately WWZ stumbles and loses its balance at the very end. Probably due to several rewrites and reshoots. Most of the problems I have all happen during the end of this film. The CG zombie were very terrifying but towards the end we see more actors playing zombies. The actors facial expressions and movements as zombies made you giggle. About 30% of the audience were laughing at some of the actors playing zombies, they were not intimidating any more. Also the ending was very predictable which made it not so epic as earlier scenes in the film.
Overall I really enjoyed WWZ. The story and action are really engaging and intense. Great summer movie.
